Moving Overseas

Leave Australia with your tax affairs in order

Moving overseas for work or a new chapter changes your Australian tax position, but not automatically, and not always in the way people expect. Becoming a non-resident for tax purposes depends on your circumstances, not just your address. If it isn’t planned, you can end up taxed in two countries.

What we advise on

Your residency status. Whether, and from when, you stop being an Australian tax resident.

Capital gains on departure. Leaving Australia can trigger tax on some assets, and there are choices to make about how that is handled.

Your home. Keeping or selling your Australian home while non-resident can affect the capital gains tax exemption.

Family trusts, companies and super funds. Moving overseas can change their residency and tax treatment, so they may need restructuring before you go.

Ongoing obligations. Australian rental income and some gains still need to be declared after you leave.

Getting advice before you leave gives you peace of mind and avoids costly surprises later.
